The paleontological remains of hominids are relatively scarce, often fragmented and display ambiguous characters. For this reason, the boundary between ape and hominid still remains one of the most heavily debated topics among paleontologists, who nevertheless agree to recognize the australopithecines as hominids. All known species related to this group come from Africa, where they inhabited already the savannah environments 5-6 million years ago.
