Avery Normal Institute Library

New Orleans, United States

The library of Avery Normal Institute, shown here, is clearly quite cramped. A notation on the back of the photograph states the obvious: “Our library is adequate from the standpoint of the number of volumes – but woefully inadequate in space.” The Avery Institute became part of the local school system in the 1940s. Today, the site houses the Avery Research Center, which is part of the College of Charleston in South Carolina.
