This image shows people from the Awajun indigenous community living in the Alto Mayo region of Peru (Peruvian Amazon). It nicely illustrates how men and woman wear different accessories. Men for example always wear headdresses while women do not. The ancestral pride of young Awajun is visible in their eyes, connecting the natural environment of the forest with the strength of their cultural identity.
The women, called “Nuwas”, play an important role within their community, being responsible of the seeds, working in the forest, and creating the orchards and their different products.
