Trained as a graphic designer, Add Fuel (PT) turned his fascination with the aesthetic possibilities of tessellations and symmetry into a globally recognized style of his own. Drawing from his cultural roots, the artist works with traditional Portuguese azulejo (glazed tiles) patterns as a base, then fuses their intricate designs with jarring pop-culture motifs or pattern work representative of the country he finds himself painting in. The result is an inherently contemporary optical illusion that allows Add Fuel to pay a particular sensitivity to heritage and history. In this piece, we see Add Fuel incorporating traditional ‘Rosemaling’ patterns taken from the Rogaland region of Norway into his work.
