The embroidered pattern of deer and cranes in spring shows the artisan’s wishes for prosperity and peace for the country and the people, as both deer and cranes are species of auspicious meanings in the Chinese culture. According to Shu Yi Ji, or Recordings of Bizarre Stories, deer is a long-living animal which turns horizon color when it’s 1000 years old, white after 500 years and black after another 500 years, while Painting of Auspicious Signs states that, white deer would appear as signs of prosperity and peace of the country if the emperor is faithfully following practice of sagacious predecessors.
