In the days following World War II, the United States assisted Japan, which had surrendered to the Americans, in converting its economy to peacetime enterprises. Saving profitable industries for its own corporations and workers, the USA encouraged Japan to produce toys for the world's markets. Japan's first exports were tin toys sometimes made of recycled metals, such as this sheriff's badge from about 1950.
