'Balada Portuguesa' knows a dramatic character: there is a widow (Hannie van Leeuwen) with three marriageable daughters (Marianna Hilarides, Milly Gramberg, and Martinette Janmaat), and a candidate for marriage, a cavalier (Jaap Flier). The widow is making an extreme effort to bring her daughters closer to the cavalier. However, at the expense of her daughters, she herself ends up with him.
