Games using a hacky sack or footbag dominated school playgrounds, street corners, and neighborhood parks in the 1970s. Hacky sack, actually the trade name of a crocheted footbag popular at the time, required players to keep the small bag filled with sand or beads off the ground by kicking, throwing, and tossing the bag in the air or to other players. The games devised for hacky sack have roots in similar Asian games in which players use their feet rather than their hands.
