Sixteenth century sources place this panel in the Vallombrosan convent of San Salvi. It documents the early activity of Leonardo alongside the master Verrocchio (1470-75) in whose workshop Leonardo had his first artistic training. Test results attribute to the young Leonardo parts of the landscape, perhaps some of the modeling of Jesus' body and of the angel in profile. From the Accademia in 1810, the painting has been in the Uffizi since 1914.
