Luigi Renault, artist. Oil on canvas. Barkentine JOSEPHINE entering Leghorn Harbor, Italy on maiden voyage. Ship white with yellow deckhouse tops; dog sitting on deckhouse. Frame 38 x 26". Built and owned at Waldoboro, Maine, but with New York as home port, JOSEPHINE made international voyages under Waldoboro Captain John B. Stahl, Jr. In common with many Maine vessels, she was painted at the seaport of Leghorn (actually Livorno), Italy. At the time of this painting, Leghorn had the privileges of a free port, without restrictions on trade and with low duties paid on goods.
