Soraegi, also called seoraegi or baraegi, is a piece of pottery used as a jar lid or a plate. This round-shaped basin generally resembles a dish with a flat bottom and no foot, but has a deeper body than a dish. It is shaped with clay and then fired. There are two types of this pottery: one that is ash-glazed before being fired is called ojigeureut; and the other that is fired without a glaze is referred to as jilgeureut. The latter features no luster on the surface. The predecessor to this type of pottery was simply a jar lid with a lotus bud-shaped knob at the center, which was particularly prominent in Seoul. However, the inefficiency of producing the lid separately led to the use of soraegi as a lid instead. Those used in Gyeongsang Province and the Gaeseong region were deeper than those used in Seoul, and were used for more diverse uses such as washing vegetables and grain or storing food ingredients.
