Basket

First half 19th century

Museo de América

Museo de América
Madrid, Spain

Coiled cone-shaped basket. It has dark brown geometrical decoration over its entire surface. This shade of brown is achieved either by selecting the fibres naturally of that colour or by dyeing the fabrics through different procedures. This piece comes from California, a cultural area which has historically distinguished itself for the excellent quality of its basketry. Specifically, this basket has rare characteristics which make it difficult to specify its exact cultural origin. It shares features with two groups from the southern centre of California: the Yokuts and the Chumash. While the conical shape with a strongly marked shoulder is typical of the Yokuts, the decorative designs are closer to the Chumash style.
