Models of couches or divan beds have been found with female figurines, and may have been associated with rituals dedicated to a goddess. For example, the discovery of a figurine, couch, and miniature pedestaled lamp in a domestic room of Beersheba led the excavator to reconstruct the spot as an area of home cultic worship. Whatever their function, their shapes enable us to gain an idea of the appearance of Iron Age furniture, none of which has survived, probably because it was constructed of wood. This piece was excavated from Tomb 1002 at the site of Lachish, Israel.
