Now what do we know about the Venus figurines from an archaeological point of view? A major part of them was discovered in pits or at the edge of concentrated deposits, frequently lying face down. The Russian sites of Avdeevo and Kostenky provide evidence of the deliberate destruction of figurines. In Dolni Vestonice in Southern Moravia, fragments of female statuettes were found together with animal figurines such as bear, lion, owl and horse. Bones of mammoths, horses or wolves were found with the figurines in the Russian sites. Red ochre plays an important part in the archaeological evidence.
