Belgian Plate

One of a set of 18 circular Belgian plates. The plate depicts a town hall in Louvain (Leuven) with lamp hanging across street. Situated Between Li�ge and Brussels, Louvain was the site of massive destruction by the German Army. Over a period of five days in August 1914 the city was burnt and looted. Its library of ancient manuscripts was burnt and destroyed, as was Louvain's university along with many other public buildings. Plate has a blue and gold decorated border. Presented to President Wilson by the King and Queen of Belgium at the White House, October 30, 1919.
