The table bell remained an integral part of Russian residential interior decoration throughout the 19th century, until the appearance of the electric bell. The bells were most often made of bronze, a metal that was easy to shape and relatively cheap, and which also could produce the sonority necessary for this kind of item. The bell was not only a tool for calling servants. Whether standing on the writing desk in the office of a state official or on the dressing table of a high-society lady, it was a trinket that adorned the everyday life of its owner.
