Belt Fitting

ca. 1800

The Walters Art Museum

The Walters Art Museum
Baltimore, United States

The front of the arc-shaped buckle is chased and worked in a perforated style, with a central medallion and tendrils around it. The outer frame combines four-leafed rosettes and leaf-shaped elements. The central medallion and the outer border are
executed in niello technique. The inner border section contains five ring-shaped elements with cross- and leaf-shaped decoration. The hole through the back still has the ring and the clasp preserved.

The back has an Arabic stamp with the name of a ruler and a date, which has not yet been deciphered.
