Bench rifles were used for competitive target shooting. A very heavy barrel and long telescopic site made this rifle accurate at 500 to 1000 yards, and, at 40 pounds, so heavy that it required an additional support. This rifle was made by Horace Warner of Ridgway, Pennsylvania, a renowned competitive sharpshooter and gunsmith who experimented extensively with rifle design.
