During the Joseon Dynasty, as the incidence of smallpox became worse every year, people started to have a folk belief that beoksu, a Korean traditional totem pole, would keep them away from smallpox. The letter Ho (虎), which means tiger, is carved in beoksu, which embodies the villagers’ wish for good health.
