The hammer and pick is a wedge-shaped or chisel-shaped tool which is held with a stem. The iron stem is not firmly wedged in the hole. It is only inserted ever so slightly and protrudes out from the pointed chisel. It can be easily separated from the stem and a new iron can be attached. This was necessary several times during a shift because the pointed iron soon became blunt. The miner therefore always took several irons with him to work which had to be sharpened again in the mine's forge after his shift.
