Miner at work

Miner working in the Maybach pit in Friedrichsthal. This miner is checking the wiring of the hydraulic props in the face support. While performing dangerous work underground, this miner is equipped with protective gear consisting of a helmet with miner's lamp, a miner's apron, knee and shin guards as well as a respirator. The Saarland witnessed accidents throughout the 1960s after the Luisenthal pit disaster, including firedamp explosions, rockfalls, fires and gas leakages.
