This design is for a wall decoration on the northern side of the entrance hall, which led into one of three drawing rooms in the Grand Appartment of Friedrich Wilhelm IV’s residence at the Berlin Palace. As a counterpart to this work, there survives a drawing for a modified design created by Albert Schütze (inv. SM 51.74). The design was, however, never used. In the catalogue for the exhibition entitled Karl Friedrich Schinkel: Furniture and Interiors (Hamburg 2002), the picture was erroneously listed as a design for a gallery in Prince Karl’s palace. For more general information about Friedrich Wilhelm IV’s apartments at the Berlin Palace, see entries relating to inv. SM 34.54.
