Mining engineer and geologist, he is the father of modern tectonics. His work on the tectonics of the Alps and Provence had a worldwide impact. He is one of the initiators of the theory of lying folds and cartages. His works are among those from which modern geology was born. Professor at the École des mines (School of Mines) where he succeeded de Chaucourtois, he was also a member of the Academy of Sciences (section of mineralogy) (January 1896)
