Woodhorn Colliery now sits within Queen Elizabeth II Country Park to the north east of Ashington. Originating towards the end of the 19th century, it employed over 2,000 workers by 1914. Production ceased in 1981 and remained open until 1986. Three years later it opened as a museum.
