The top 2 thirds of the tube of this microscope branch gradually into 2 separate arms. These house eyepieces that move vertically using a rack mechanism on the back of the tube. The tube is supported by an arm extending from the pillar, with a screw system holding a revolver-style piece at the bottom, which houses 2 lenses.
The pillar comprises 2 quadrangular pieces that move the tube vertically one inside the other for macroscopic focusing. This movement is generated by a rack mechanism controlled by 2 screws. Microscopic focusing is achieved with a screw at the top of the pillar.
The rectangular stage has a mechanical system with 2 curved limbs that can move the slide in any direction. Below the stage is a diaphragm with different-sized holes. At the bottom of the main pillar is the plano-concave mirror. This pillar sits on a double pedestal with an articulated screw that enables the instrument to tilt until it is horizontal.
The pedestal is supported in the middle of the black, iron horseshoe-shaped base with a heel bearing the inscription: "M. Pillischer. London. Nº 1556."
