Black-Haired Girl with Lifted Skirt

Egon Schiele1911

Leopold Museum

Leopold Museum
Vienna, Austria

One of the most beautiful and expressive faces, showing dreamy abandon and ecstasy, is juxtaposed with the girl’s genitals, framed by the sweeping dark curve of her skirt. These two eye-catching features are separated rather than linked by the girl’s slender body and in this way a comparison is drawn. This work stands out because of the concise painting. The rich tonal values of the dark skirt consist of a wide palette of different shades ranging from black, ultramarine and purple to ochre and red. The dark hair is rendered with painterly freedom and its thickness and volume are expressed in lively contrasts of dark and light. A girl’s erotic dream has been expressed in paint.
