Heungnip is a hat painted in black that was worn during the Joseon Dynasty. Its crown and brim were woven from bamboo strips or horsehair, covered with burlap or hemp cloth, and painted in black. The name heungnip was referred to by different names according to the material covering the crown and brim. Those covered with horsehair were called mamirip, those covered with pig hair were jeomorip, and those covered with thin bamboo strips were juksarip or jinsarip. Juksarip that was covered with cloth was called porip. As the successor of a brimmed hat and a straw hat, heungnip became the preserve of noblemen in the Joseon Dynasty and featured a tall height and a wide brim. However, as the clothing system became simplified under the regency of Yi Haeung, the height and brim width of heungnip became lower and narrower.
