Black walnut

Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum

Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum
Oxford, United Kingdom

A favourite with the squirrels, the black walnut (Juglans nigra) gets its name from its dark timber and the ridged dark grey/black bark. It produces edible seeds, which are notoriously hard to extract from their husks, unlike the common walnut which is cultivated commercially for its seeds. If you rub the leaves of a black walnut a strong aroma is released, which most people find pleasant.
