The cane wicker blind cricket ball had been invented in Australia circa late 19th century to early 20th century. Prior to this, crude kerosene/tin cans were moulded into an oval shape with rocks inside, as a cricket ball. Community advocacy helped design and fashion a ball which would not injure blind players (Kooyong Victoria), as early as 1877.

The cane ball was used up to 1974, when a black nylon ball was adopted until the 2003/04 seasons, when the white nylon ball was first officially used in tournaments - however some states did use the ball earlier.
