The memorial is a simplistic and timeless design, using slope and grade changes, plant material, and granite blocks to remember the courage of Americans during World War I.
Over 116,000 individually crafted granite blocks honor the heroism and valor of the American servicemen and women during World War I. Each block represents the individual who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the war; the culmination of these blocks creating the memorial wall. As one enters the center of the space, the sheer number of handcrafted granite blocks produces an overwhelming sensation of our country's sacrifice.
