Blue-ground Satin Bedspread with Embroidered Floral and Bird Pattern

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

The highlight of this piece lies in the floral medallion in the center, which is adorned with auspicious floral and bird motifs such as peony, peacocks, pheasants, butterflies, etc. Small flowering branches scatter around the medallion, while curly leaves, birds and flowers, dyed in pink and purple with the popular aniline dyes of that era, can be found along the edges. This item also features fringe hem, a common ornament on the then exported shawls and parasols.
