In his later years Walton developed a deep interest in flickering, changing effects of light and shade. This painting is transitional between his earlier realist, Glasgow School pictures, and his later landscapes. The difference between the very smooth painting of the girl's face, and the rougher background, is often seen in the work of painters influenced by the French artist Jules Bastien-Lepage.
