Backgammon is one of the oldest-known board games for two people. It has roots in the ancient Egyptian game called "Senet," and also traces its history to Southwest Asia, Mesopotamia, ancient Iran, and even Rome. This 5000-year-old game is still very popular in contemporary culture. Backgammon is a race game, based on strategy and luck. Computer scientists have studied backgammon and, similar to Chess, have created programs that can beat expert players. The game is played in nearly every country of the world and has enjoyed new popularity in the United States since its resurgence in the 1960s.
