Parcheesi is an American adaptation of the Indian Cross and Circle game Pachisi. The game is often subtitled Royal Game of India. Pachisi was created in India around 1500.
John Hamilton first registered the copyrights to the American adaptation, as Patchessi in 1867. In 1870, the rights were sold to a New York game manufacturer Selchow & Righter, who registered the trademark in 1874. This game was a great success in sales at that time. Many other game producers brought out their versions, under slightly different names and designs. The game is especially popular in Spain, where it is called Parch퀌_s or Parqu퀌s. The rules there are slightly different, mainly because of the influence of Ludo, the English version. It is played in many other countries, under various names, as well. It has also influenced later 20th century spin-off American games, such as Trouble, Sorry!, Aggravation, and Wahoo!
