New York game manufacturer Selchow & Righter purchased the rights to the ancient Indian game Pachisi in 1870, and trademarked the name for it as "Parcheesi" in 1874. For years the firm profited from sales of the game, even if competitors marketed very similar games with names such as "Game of India" or "Indian Royal Game."
