Board game manufacturers, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, produced many games with simple nursery rhyme or fairy tale themes. Games such as this appealed to younger children and their parents, who purchased the games. The nursery rhyme "The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe" demonstrates a good example of this. Younger children understood the simple race game inside; and the actual nursery rhyme is printed, in full, on the box cover.
