Built in the late 16th century for the Bampfylde family, Bampfylde House was partially destroyed during the bombing of Exeter on 4 May 1942. In 1934 the City Council had purchased the house and opened it as a museum. The remains of Bampfylde House were demolished as part of Exeter's post-war rebuilding.
