This photograph, taken by George Bernard Wood for the National Buildings Record, shows the remains of bomb-damaged houses in Hull's High Street. In the background is the tower of Holy Trinity Church. As a port city, Hull was a major target for aerial bombardment during the Second World War, and around ninety-five per cent of its houses were damaged or destroyed.
