This gold embroidered bonnet dates back to the beginning of the 16th century. Its soft silk velvet is decorated with the coat of arms of Emperor Charles V, a two-headed Imperial eagle crowned with a cross and a heart embroidered with gold Bullion fringe [gold thread twisted on a silk core] and a tight ribbon or band. Inspired by military caps, bonnets are known from the Middle Ages. They were initially worn by kings; later they became fashionable among priests from the upper echelons of the Catholic church.
