This collapsible book stand consists of two panels, one a book rest and the other a leg. The parts are interlocked at three points. The entire surface is coated with black lacquer. In the center of the book stand, the initials IHS (Iesus Hominum Salvator), the mark of the Society of Jesus, are written in mother-of-pearl inlay and gold flat maki-e. The rest of the surface is filled with cherry blossoms, mandarin oranges and paulownia, using the same decorative techniques. This was probably used as a Bible stand.
