Border of white machine made lace. The motifs in the lower border and the figures are outlined by a thicker thread. There is also a mesh background which imitates Mechlin bobbin lace. On a paved floor stand alternately jesters and women in mediaeval costume holding a bird. In between each figure is a flower sprig. There is also a lower scalloped border of leafy scrolls. A piece of machine made lace of a similar design exists in the Castle Museum, Nottingham. That piece was given to Nottingham by Madame Bourlander and was said to have been made in Calais in about 1890.
