The artist tried to recreate every lingering moment in our memory, albeit just a temporary shelter, it still carries the meaning of “home” for whoever is staying in it.
“I want to create a certain setting to encourage amusement by the trifles in life. From the details we take for granted, we will experience a familiar sense of estrangement, and by this magical encounter, we may also create new meaning and connection for a familiar place.”
Having chosen the most common and senseless scene of past memory and the current reality, Lin Yu-Ting uses cake-making techniques (crowding, decorating, sandwiching) on foam materials to create intriguing mini models of buildings commonplace during the period between the 60’s and 80’s in Taiwan. The images of the buildings, including a duplex, indoor garage, iron-bars on apartment windows and illegal buildings that sit on rooftops, are rendered in the form of a cake to present a nostalgic sweetness from the past.
