Though now hard to detect at first glance, the motifs that decorate the sides of this bottle were painted in black lines and featured fringes and symbols that resemble military insignia. Depictions of war and military insignia are common themes in the vases decorated by fineline painting typical of Peru’s Northern Coast and offer evidence of persisting political instability among the different groups that occupied these areas.
