Bow Drill & Mouthpiece

Inuit carvers used a hand-powered bow drill to sculpt the raw ivory. The line of the bow wraps around the shaft of the drill. With the mouthpiece held between the teeth, one hand turns the drill while the other guides the carving. Inuit, Alaska, 1875-1900
