In the 1980s, toy designer Maureen Trotto of Thin Air, along with Tim Clarke and Larry Mass designed Boglins puppet monsters for Mattel Inc. The squishy figures of latex, called by some admirers both gross and adorable, came with a ready-made sympathic story: "Long ago," advertising proclaimed, "the Boglins used to live in the Swamp, but when the swamp dried up the Boglins had to find a new place to live." Ugly creatures packaged in their own cages, Boglins captured the creature culture made popular by stories, movies, and TV shows about Ghoulies, Critters, Gremlins, and other gruesome critters. Other series of Boglins followed, including Baby Boglins, Mini Boglins, and more. The toy line reappeared in the 1990s and again in the early 2000s. The smaller Glow Boglins appeared in the late 1980s.
