Rijksmuseum van Oudheden
Leiden, Netherlands

This silver bracelet is composed of a thin band of silver ending in two snakes’ heads. Decorative scoring has been applied to its surface to create the impression of snake skin. Goldsmiths derived much inspiration from the writhing coils of snakes in antiquity. Rings, bracelets, and even thigh bands were made in the shape of coiling snakes.
