Two fragments of shale bracelet. The manufacture of shale began during the iron age on the Isle of Purbeck, which is the nearest source of shale at Portchester. Shale is very eaily worked when it first comes out of the ground and bracelets were made by turning on a lathe. The production continued into and throughout the roman period, with beads and even furniture made from the material.
