Brass Hanging Lamp

Walthamstow, London, United Kingdom

This open brass hanging lamp features ornate decoration on the upper part of the drum which resembles a thistle pattern. The lamp is surmounted by brass balls and a domed hood which ends in the chains that suspend the lamp. It was designed for use with electric lights rather than gas lighting which produced an unsteady yellowish light. Mackmurdo’s decision to begin producing electric lamps in the mid-1880s strengthened the progressive credentials of the Century Guild as the technology was still very new.
