Hammered, embossed objects with schematic designs are characteristic of “late” Quimbaya metalwork art, contemporary with the arrival of the Spaniards to the mid-Cauca region in the sixteenth century. In this example, birds and spirals are placed inside four quadrants, as part of some sort of mysterious symbolism.
