From the Artist: Being in nature is so calming. Studies show that just looking at pictures of nature can have the same effect. I have been involved in a business incubator project during the pandemic to build a photography practice that revolves around evidence-based art, the concept that photographs of nature can help reduce stress. In a healthcare setting, evidence suggests that images of the natural world help patients heal faster and create a more serene atmosphere for staff, and visitors too.

Some years ago, I sold an image of the autumn sunlight reflecting off reeds at Rockwood Hall in Sleepy Hollow to Lawrence Hospital. I was thrilled when my friend Frank told me how he always felt calmer when he viewed that photograph while undergoing his now successful cancer treatment there. Working toward the goal of providing images that can do good in the world has helped me feel productive during the pandemic.

This photograph of Bride Brook Salt Marsh in Niantic, was taken on my only short trip away from home in 2020. It represents my personal change and growth in envisioning this new photography practice. It also represents creation as coping, healing, and my desire to give back to the community. Choosing an autumnal image, reminiscent of the one that helped Frank, speaks to my hope for a post-pandemic future where I can return to traveling and creating images of the natural world to help others heal.
